First post in this forum...During recent travels in Lower 48, I bought a Marlin 1891 .22 octagon side load that was an obvious barn gun. It's in serious need of a straight grip/crescent style buttstock due to period style of "field repairs" done by many back then..but the rest of the rifle is all there and pretty decent shape for the years, even given the sandpaper cleanup done by the seller..it's still a shooter and keeper so I've started research on it but I'm out of my area with Marlin and looking for some guidance. Specifically looking for identifying the Year of Manufacture with SN 59674 Would also like to find a source for the proper OEM buttstock and searching eBay frequently (some decent old wood there but all shotgun butts so far)
I know a photos would help this post but I haven't figured out how to do it yet on this old PhotoBucket era forum software...

Re: Model 1891 .22 Side Load YOM?
Kummok;
Your Marlin Model 1891 1st variation was shipped from the factory in New Haven, Ct. in October of 1891. As to a butt stock and/or a new foream, check with Precision Gun Stocks of Kerrville, Texas. A stock for a Model 1892 should work. Even a Model 1897 stock should work and Precision does carry those.
Good luck.....

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

ThanX, Gunrunner..very helpful info and very much appreciated! I'd found the Precision folks online last week and it looks like a very respectable outfit..also found some old original candidates online, albeit for quite a bit more $$. Will likely go with an old original..bought this one as a shooter/keeper because it pairs up well with the star stamped HS SN'd Model 39 I got for my 9th birthday in 1959 while in Alaska

Kummok I believe i have a butt stock ! Wood is original with a small repair on toe sometime in the past. It has the crescent butt plate. Appears to be iron. If you email me at bubbadad1982@gmail.com I can send pictures to see if it is a match for what you need. Chris
