New 1894 .44 Mag bullet or load limits???

Post by KennVFRidr »

I just filled out the 4473 Form for one of the new 1894's in .44 mag and I'm wondering about bullet weight, load limitations as there are some pretty potent factory offerings out there these days. I'm guessing the Underwood .44 Remington Mag +P+ 340 Grain Lead Flat Nose might not be an acceptable factory round for the Marlin...but where should I draw the line?

Also, do some of the heavy weight bullet designs cause cycling issues?

I sent an inquiry to Marlin, but no answer yet.

New Marlin owner wondering...

OAL of the cartridge will be a big factor in whether a particular round will function through the action of any lever action rifle. So some of the cartridges using very heavy bullets may not function as well as standard .44 Magnum ammo will.
I personally would stay with more traditional ammo and not buy anything way out on the fringes of what's standard until you see how it functions. Then I'd measure OAL of standard cartridges with a dial caliper, and check it against these other cartridges prior to purchasing anything.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
