I just acquired a Marlin 1898 12g pump in a private transaction. Nobody - including the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody, Wy - can tell me when the gun was made.
I know it was after 1904, because the last of 5 patent dates engraved on the barrel is Nov. 29, 1904. The first patent date listed is April 2, 1889, followed by two different dates in 1894 and a fourth date in 1900.
The serial number on the barrel is 79151 F
The serial number on the receiver is 74724
If anyone can identify the manufacturer date on this gun conclusively, I'd certainly appreciate it!

I should clarify, I BELIEVE this is a model 1898, but some research leaves me unsure because I can't find any other model 1898s with patent dates as early as 1889 like mine has.
Perhaps this is an earlier model?

Except for the Models 1898 and 16, the Marlin exposed hammer shotguns are marked with a model designation on the upper tang, behind the hammer.
The patent dates you list are for the Model 19 and 17 which came out in 1906. The difference between the Model 17 and 19 is that the Model 17 is a solid frame gun whereas the Model 19 has a takedown system to allow the gun to be broken down into two sections. Your serial number could be from that era. The existing factory records for the Marlin shotguns end at about 67,000 in 1904 and list some of the Model 1898 and 16.

As stated before, the Model 1898 and 19 are takedown actions and the Model 17 is a solid frame gun. But, the Models 1898 and 19 have pistol grip stocks and the Model 17 is a straight grip gun.
