Special Smokeless 1893

Post by Jthomas1967 »

Need some help dating and valuating my rifle.
Says “Special Smokeless Steel” on side of octagon barrel.
Says “Marlin Safety” on top of receiver.
Says “Marlin Fire-Arms CO. New-Haven CT U.S.A” on top of barrel
Says “Patented Oct 11 1887, April 2, 1889, August 1, 1893” on top of barrel immediately under the Marlin Fire-Arms marking.
Says “D 4326” on the underside of receiver.
Says “Model 1893” behind hammer.

It’s blued and not case hardened.

Help if you can please.

Jim;

Being that your Marlin is stamped Model 1893, with the "D" serial number prefix, that should be stamped up by the forearm, and not back, under the lever, the "D" prefix would make this gun made approximately 1918/1919 time frame.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.

If the world was perfect.......it wouldn't be.

Thank you for your reply. I wanted to post pics for you to see the rifle and maybe give me an idea on its value but I don’t seem to have the credentials on the forum to do that yet.
If you want to DM me with another option on how to send the pics I’d be happy to do so.
Thanks,
Jim

The refinished metal and wood will hurt the value a lot. Especially so since the receiver was blued instead of being color cased, and the bluing appears to be hot blue, not rust blue. Likely a great shooter, but little collector value left as it is.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
