Special smokeless steel

Post by shootrj2003 »

Are there instances of 30/30 model 1893’s ,being manufactured in 1900,without the SSS marking on the barrel?

I have not seen one, but it is possible. The 30-30 was a smokeless and Marlin states in catalogs all barrels are Smokeless Steel. In early catalogs Marlins states all model 1895 barrels are Smokeless, but some early barrels are not marked as such, as they may have not had stamps ready. I have one not marked and have seen others, and I have seen one that was hand engraved rather then roll stamped.

Mine was made in 1900 and I did an exhaustive investigation into its various indications of mfg. year andI am sure as I can be it’s 1900 ,however it’s not marked “Special Smokeless Steel” I’ve had this rifle since 2000 something and checked the mfg. date twice at least twice and arrived a the same mfg. date.
