odd 39D prototype?

Post by timcornish »

I have a 39D that is odd in that it has a straight stock and the serial number indicates a 1969 manufacture date. the stock is fancy fiddle back walnut as if the forearm. Could this be a prototype? I bought it from a well-known dealer in old guns who said it was part of the collection of a man who worked for marlin and cehe=rry picked guns for his kids.

Timcornish;

Sounds like something that was put together by the Marlin employee for himself. He would have had to use the straight grip half (rear half) of the receiver from the straight grip Mountie to put on the front section of a Model 39D. Do the serial numbered sections match?
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

I would guess that is what happened, I have another of his that is an 1893 short octagon 30 30, with a pre-war barrel on a post-war receiver. on the 39, The left side of the receiver matches the tang number, are there any other?
