NEWB needs help with ID

Looks like a winchester to me. Wrong forum I think. Definitely not a Ballard.

It would appear to be a mix of different Model 1892 Winchesters. It has a carbine with sling ring receiver and forearm but a rifle style butt stock. The original Model 1892 was never made in the .44 Magnum caliber as stamped on the barrel. In 1999, Winchester did offer a "new" Model 1892 in the .44 Magnum caliber. So, your old Model 1892 may have had a new barrel installed.
The 1000 serial number is about anyone's guess. Did someone file off the original serial number and re-stamp it with 1000? I do not know if Winchesters are like the Marlin rifles, where removing the butt stock will show another serial number on the side of the upper tang of the receiver. Would be worth the effort to remove the butt stock and see.

Winchesters only had one serial number, so that 1000 is either it, or a restamp. The 1892 is what I call a Frankenstein, as it's mix and match. Might be a great shooter, but no collector interest with the changes.
