Faux Marlin

Post by Brent »

This really isn't about a Marlin, but I've read that Marlin bought out Hopkins and Allen in 1914. So maybe someone here can help me with a quick answer.

Tonight, a guy I met briefly, is coming by to look at an old .22 singleshot that has been in my family for at least 3, if not 4, generations. the guy is a local volunteer fire fighter and has a couple of young kids. Other than that, I don't now anything about him, but he wants a first rifle for his kids.

It is, perhaps, not a great rifle, but I'm thinking of giving him two prices. One is a cash price, and it's all his. The second is free with the caveat he never sells it but passes it on to kids, grandkids, neighbor kids whatever, with the same promise.

So, the rifle is a relined Hopkins and Allen 722. It is in far better condition that any of these that I have ever seen - which is to say, it is the only model of rifle I regularly see in worse condition than the junker Stevens Favorites and Crackshots at gun shows. It has some case colors left and other than some pitting on the lower left side of the receiver it is all pretty nice condition. It still shoots well too.

My question is, what is a reasonable cash price? If any of you have a quick blue-book value or some auction price, whatever, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. I have no guess as to its worth.

I'm going to miss this rifle because I dragged it and a Winchester 1890 all over the Arrowhead in NE Minnesota when I was a kid, but I'll never use it again so it is time move it on to someone that can use it.

Thanks, for any estimates you can provide.

Brent;

The gun is probably worth in the $100.00 to 150.00 range. Should make a great kid's first gun.
Good luck with the deal.

Well, it's gone now. The guy and his 11 yr old daughter came by about an hour ago. I gave it to them with the promise to give it to someone else down the road. Threw in a bulk box of Federa Automatch too. Ms. Molly is pretty excited about it. Her infant brother will like it too, one day. But I'm missing it already. Ah well... Had to happen.

Brent;

That is very generous of you. You will get far more satisfaction knowing you gave it to them to enjoy than if you sold it to them. I for one, congratulate you for your generosity!

I agree with Rick, what a great gesture and I'm sure as years go by you will both appreciate it more. :)
