I need some information, and a bit of curiousity....
I have inherited an old rifle from my father which belonged to his father years ago, an old Marlin .22 single bolt action rifle. I would like to know what vintage or year it is if possible, and why I am noticing there seems to be an information gap after 1906 or so? The rifle is a round-tapered barrel with a walnut stock, barel is fastened to stock by one screw on bottom, bullseye on bottom of stock, brass trigger lever, t-handle for arming, chrome or stainless bolt, barrel is marked"The Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, Conn, USA. model-101-micro-groove barrel-cal.22 S.L.&LR. There is a number near the bolt end which I assume to be the serial, 68 50202. I have fired several rounds thru it at the range, and it still shoots an excellent pattern, cosmetically in fair shape, was in a house fire long ago so some of the bluing has been tarnished and the small end of the stock finish has been heat discolored.

This is an easy one. Your Marlin Model 101 was made in 1968, by the serial number. The Model 101 was made from 1941 to 1977 in several variations and styles over the years.
The Micro-Groove barrel was used in all Marlin .22 caliber rifles starting in 1954. The "T" shaped cocking handle was started in 1966. The Model 101 originally sold for $24.95 in 1968.
As to the gap in Marlin records after 1906, that is because the old Marlin records for lever action rifles stop in December of 1906. Shotgun records end in 1904. The records start again in about 1952, for guns that had serial numbers applied (Model 336's and Model 39's mostly) After passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968, all firearms had to have serial numbers and records maintained.
I hope this helps.
