Sounds like either a Marlin Glenfield Model 60 or a Model 65 rifle. Dependingu upon which one you have, they were manufactured at different times. The Glenfield Model 60 was made from 1966 to 1982, and became the Marlin Model 60 in 1983. (it is still made today) The Glenfield Model 65 was a special gun made for the Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company (OTASCO) for a number of years. Those guns had a brass loading tube. If you will post the first two digits (or letter prefix) of the serial number, someone can tell you when it was manufactured. Guns made prior to 1968 will not have a serial number.
I hope this helps.
