Marlin Bullseye

Post by w18764560 »

I just found a great 81DL w/24" barrel in a pawn shop and I am wondering if the presence of the Marlin Bullseye in the stock would help narrow the year of manufacture? Also it has a plastic trigger guard and a nice walnut oil finish stock...it appears to be in original condition with the 12R peepsight intact...metal is turning a plum brown on exposed areas and with stock off it is still factory blue...
Thanks

W18764560;

Marlin first use of the "Bullseye" was on the cover of the 1923 Marlin catalog. The Model 81 DL was introduced in 1941. If your Model 81 DL has the Bishop style Monte Carlo stock, it would be after 1957. All .22 caliber Marlin rifles had the patented Micro-Groove rifling after 1954.
These are a couple of clues to look for on your Model 81 DL to help determine the manufacture date.
I hope this helps.

Thanks...this rifle has 'The Marlin Firearms Co.' in a sort of fancy lettering and also says 'est 1870' no micro groove rifling...as to the stock is the Monte Carlo you speak of...very pronounced, or subtle...
Thanks again
