Experts, please: does the 39D have a grip cap? I thought it was normally a plain wood PG, but recently saw
one with a cap and white spacer.

In 1971, the Model 39D was introduced with a white line grip cap. The 39D was not listed in the 1972 Marlin catalog, but came back in 1973 without the white line grip cap. There were 15,657 Model 39D's made in 1971 and 1972. There were 7,891 made after that up to 1974.
