help on Id an Marlin lever 30-06 SN in front of lever 440781. Apparent factory stock inlays (left and right side) and on forend. Cannot find SN on any site. Carbine, to say the least.

Marlin never made any lever actions chambered in the .30-06 cartridge. The serial number indicates your gun is likely around WWI period, so either the cartridge you think it is isn't, or somebody did some horrible, dangerous rechambering to a Marlin.
Need more info from the gun to determine what you have? Have you looked at the top tang area behind the hammer to see what the stamp there says? If it has a sight there, remove the two screws and see what's stamped there.
