Will need more information than that to help. What is the serial number and exact barrel length (measured to the front of the breech block)? There should be a letter stamped on the side of the barrel indicating the choke of the barrel. It will be either an F, M or C. Distance of the front sight to the end of the barrel?
What "hang fire safety release" system does it have? Push button up by the hammer, or a lever down by the trigger?

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The "A" serial number prefix indicates that your Marlin Model 17-S was made in 1916. The "M" on the barrel near the serial number indicates that originally this was a barrel with a modified choke. Real Riot Guns had a cylinder bore barrel, indicated with the letter "C". The front sight is too far from the end of the correct length barrel for a riot gun. The front sight should only be 3/4 of an inch from the end of the barrel.
All this would indicate that this Model 17-S was cut down to the 20 inch barrel length after it left the factory. There were quite a few Marlin shotguns cut down to use in the Cowboy Action Shooting contests until the SASS outlawed the use of the Marlin made shotguns due to safety reasons.
