Engraved Golden 39A made 1959

Post by jpace104 »

I recently acquired a beautifully engraved Marlin Golden 39A made in 1959. The right side of the stock has a carved image of a squirrel on a limb with leaves. It also is nicely checkered as is the forearm. The barrel is heavily engraved with a high polish finish. The right side of the receiver has an image of a squirrel while the left side has two rabbits. The lever also is engraved. The barrel is stamped JM. I was told the rifle was factory engraved for a presentation to a Colonel. Can anyone provide me any insight into the history of this gun. It is truly one of the most beautiful guns I have seen.

At one time, Marlin toyed with the idea of some modern factory engraved gun about the time your rifle is dated to. These were limited and were engraved in Germany and Spain. Nothing became of the idea because of the cost but a few of the guns do exist and are floating around.
Yours may be one of those, but would need to see photos to compare to known examples.

Go to the Topic titled "No Longer Guest Questions". The very first post gives instructions on how to attach photos with your post.

The stock carving and checking is aftermarket work as is the engraving. That is not the style of engraving of either the German or Spanish engravers as outsourced by Marlin.
The engraving on your rifle is better than most aftermarket work I have seen. Even though this is not a "factory" engraved gun, it does have some appeal and you like it, and that is what matters most!
