Marlin Model 39 TDS

Post by j7l2 »

Are these collectible or desirable? Seems pretty neat with the 16 1/2 barrel. Any idea of total production? Blue Book says $850 in 100% condition does this seem accurate? Any other info appreciated.

J7I2:

These are desirable and collectible as well. Between 1987 and 1995, there were 10,002 39 TDS produced. It seems to me that the TDS was discontinued for a short time and when re-introduced they had checkered stocks, but I may be mistaken on that. If I were going to buy one, I would want one with the non-checkered stocks. They should also have the case that came with the gun from the factory.
As far as price goes, they seldom the show up under the $850.00 price mentioned. Many on the internet are priced in excess of a grand.

J7I2;

That would be 1990.
Another Model 39 version you might want to consider is the Model 39D. These were made only a couple of years and are quite scarce, too.

Thank you for the serial number info. I assume the first two digits tell you the year? Is the rest of the number the number of all models made that year? I never heard of a 39D. Will have to research that one.
Thanks again.

J7I2:

Yes, you are correct, the first two digits determine the year of manufacture. The other numbers are production numbers Marlin used to signify the model and at what point in the production year the gun was made according to the schedule.
The Model 39 D was made from 1970 to 1974. During the production, there were 26,979 manufactured.

On the Marlin Model 39's that have the crossbolt safety. Has anyone ever had the safety out? Mine acts like something is metal to metal and shearing something off. Tried putting lube on it but does not help. I notice replacement part is not available. Hate to take it out and find something broken with no replacement. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

After getting no responses to my question I removed the crossbolt safety assembly. The problem was the spring behind the ball detent was broken. Now just have to find a spring. Doesn't look like an easy one to find. Surprised no one had removed one of these safetys before now. And of course you cannot buy a replacement from Marlin? Remington.

J7I2;

Having not collected later Marlins, I could not help you on the Cross Bolt Safety problem. But, you might want to check with Brownell's for a replacement spring. They have lots of different springs available, so you will just need to find one similar that will fit and work the way an original does.
Another option is to look for a Cross Bolt Safety spring from another model, like a 336. Marlin may have that one since they no longer make the Model 39-AS.

I removed a crossbolt safety from a 336 and they are setup differently(hard to believe). I wonder who has all the Marlin parts after Remington bought Marlin. Contacting Remington is a lost cause.
Thanks for responding.
