1898 shotgun help with info pls.

Post by Milsurp88 »

Hello,
I have a 1898 Marlin 12 Ga I'm assuming produced around 1905 but if I could get anymore precise info on it or what grade it was I would greatly appreciate.
As I am in the process of restoring it and know more about the history of a gun really helps me.
Serial# 39218
Barrel# 40565F which I know F is Full choke.

Your "A" Grade ( standard version ) Marlin Model 1898 was shipped in mid-1902. It was shipped a 30 inch barrel with serial number 40565. That is all that is mentioned in the old factory records.
I hope this helps.

Now If i could just find a stock and pump grip for it.lol
I'am making some from a wood blank but it's slow and tedious work.
Thanks again.

Those do show up on eBay from time to time. About any model Marlin exposed hammer shotgun stock will interchange. The forearm pump handle is different. You will need either a Model 1898, 19 or 21 to get one that will work on your Model 1898.

Gun runner, I just got a marlin model 24 (factory 17" barrel (?) with a rifle style sight) that's an early one as evident by the push button to the right of the hammer... anyways.. it's missing the recoil safety and the spring assembly. I do have the block. Would you happen to have one for sale Sir? Thanks in advance. Roger

Mr.Concrete1964;

I no longer have any parts for Marlin shotguns. I sold all my shotguns and the extra parts went along with them.
Watch eBay. Those parts show up there quite often, and that is where I got any and all parts I had. To help narrow the search, use the search term "Marlin Shotgun" or "Marlin Shotgun Parts".
Good luck........

gunrunner,
I recently acquired a Marlin 12 ga. pump (slide action) shotgun with a hammer. From what I can surmise after reading other posts it was manufactured prior to the 1898. Its barrel serial # 12784 with a receiver and stock serial #12129. The writing on the barrel says:
Marlin Fire Arms Co., New Haven CT. U.S.A.
Pat'd Nov. 6, 1894, May 12, 1896 & June 2, 1896

Any help with possible age and history of the model would be greatly appreciated.

Antman;

With those patent dates, it is a Model 1898, and with a serial numberin the 12,000 range it would have been made around 1901 or so. Just because it has a 1896 patent date, does not mean it was made then. The Model 1898 did not come out until.....wait for it.......1898.
