Hello,
I could use some advice on the date, and history of a new to me Marlin 39a which I think is a Mountie. Serial number is P21721.
It has a gold trigger but the barrel is not gold stamped. I think it's a 1957 but not sure. I paid $450.00 for it today . Please help.
Thanks

The "P" serial number indicates that your rifle was made in 1957 as you surmised. To be a Mountie made in 1957, it will have a straight grip stock and a 20 inch barrel. There were 10, 808 Mounties made in 1957. Check the barrel to see if it is marked Micro-Groove. A very limited number of Mounties made that year did not have the patented Micro-Groove Rifling. If it is not marked, check the bore to count the lands and grooves inside the barrel to determine if it has Micro-Groove rifling, or the old style, Ballard rifling.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
