No records for that serial number, but my guess would be around 1913 or so.

The serial number records end at roughly 355,000 at the end of 1906. At the time Marlin was producing about 20,000 units a year. That would suggest your gun was produced around 1908 or 1909. Be advised not to shoot modern high speed ammo in your gun. It was produced before such ammo was available. It's probably okay to shoot target loads, which are available at any sporting goods store. Anything under 1100 feet per second should be okay.

Cornhusker Dave;

The 20,000 units per year works for a while. After 1898, Marlin introduces the pump shotguns, and after 1906, Marlin starts producing pump action rifle. So, with the increase of different models, and no increase in production facilities, ( John Marlin was not interested in going for military contracts as he would have to increase both facilities and personnel, and he did not want to do either ) some production of the lever action line would have decreased at some point to allow the company to produce the added lines of product.
I have a lever gun known to have been made in the "fall of 1913" with a serial number in the 442,000 serial number range
( this is about 86,500 for a 6 to 7 year period ). Using this figure, production of a gun in the 402,000 range should fall in the late 1910, early 1911 time period.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

HI I HAVE A QUESTION MAYBE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME. I HAVE A MARLIN 1897 MADE IN LATE 1910 0R EARLY 1911, AND IT HAS FIVE SCREWS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER. OTHER 1897 22 RIMFIRES THAT ARE ON GUNBROKER HAVE ONLY THREE SCRFEWS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER. I WAS THINKING WHY IS THERE A DIFFERANCE IN THOSE VERCES MINE?

Bigstarr1;

There should be 4 screws on the left side of a late Model '97 from the factory. One in about the middle, which is for the cartridge guide on the inside of the receiver. One, up near the hammer, is the pivot screw for the cartridge lifter and the other two screws near the top of the receiver are there to hold the ejector base in place on the inside of the receiver.
Where is this 5th screw located? It may be something added for some type of receiver sight that was added later.

RBGould1983;

A pistol grip stock will be hard to find. Your best bet is to watch eBay and Gun Broker. You might check Precision Gun Stocks of Kerrville, Texas to see if they offer a new stock for a Model 39. That would work on your late Model '97.
Good luck.......

RBGould1983;

You would want the Model 39 butt stock for your Marlin Model '97. The Model 39 stock would have the flat "S" style pistol grip stock that would be like what the Model '97 had.
I live north of Abilene, which is straight north of Wichita.
