Hello,
Also new to forum but an old shooter/hunter/veteran. I have a Wards-Westernfield 40, which cross references as a Marlin 101 or Glenfield 10. Needs a new bolt. My Dad was a great gunsmith and completely went through this rifle. Only has half the bolt, the bolt handle half which fits perfectly. When a purchased bolt parts from Numrichs they did not (bolt handle). The schematic for the above models shows a single shot. Mine is a tube fed, and I need the inner tube. I think something is amiss with the cross references on this rifle. Rifle says on left side of barrel, WARDS-WESTERNFIELD 40 MODEL PAT. JUNE61932 .22LR ONLY.
Thanks

What are the first two digits of the serial number? And, is it 890 or 980?

big shrek,

New member and have learned a lot already. Will have lots of questions for you guys in the near future.

Do these cross-referenced firearms use the same manufacturing date based upon the first two digits of the serial number as do the "parent" Marlin firearm?

Thanks for your help!

Sometimes, and sometimes not. Some have their own special numbers requested by the companies who contracted for them.

Big Shrek,

Thanks for the information. I have another question for you or Regnier (gunrunner) regarding Marlin model 60s and the various variants.

In the old post about serial numbers as they pertain to manufacture dates; (1) model 60 rifles made from 1960 until the GCA of 1968 had a two-letter code on the left side of the barrel near where it joins the receiver - the first letter designated the month and the second letter the year of manufacture, (2) model 60 rifles made from 1968 through 1972 had serial numbers of which the first two digits designated the year of manufacture, and (3) model 60 rifles made since 1973 had serial numbers in which the first two digits when subtracted from 100 gave the year of manufacture.

Did I understand this correctly? If so, I am confused and believe I have found an error in the numbering system. The reason I say this is I have a Glenfield model 60, serial number 22342815, with the walnut finished birch "squirrel" stock. According to the system cited above, this rifle should have been made in 1978, but that is impossible.

I say that it is impossible because I bought this rifle in July 1977. There is absolutely no doubt about the time of purchase. I graduated from high school on June 1, 1977 and began my first job about 10 days later. I was paid once every two weeks and was held two weeks behind, so I didn't get my first "real" paycheck until July 1977. The first thing I did after cashing my check was drive to the local Sears to buy this rifle. It was the first firearm I ever bought and, as everyone knows, no one ever forgets their first gun. I still have it today and will eventually pass it to my oldest grandson.

The rifle could not have been made in 1978 when I bought it in 1977. How can I reconcile this with information previously posted regarding serial numbers and dates of manufacture?

Utvolsfan77;

Marlin had a way of scheduling production that made "blocks" of a particular model at a time. It may well be that the 1978 Model 60 guns were made in 1977 and some released early. The Model 60 was by far the produced gun Marlin made and sold, so they may have upped the production due to increased sales of the Model 60 guns for 1978 in 1977 and release them sooner than the date they should have.
I do have some production schedules for past gun production, but they are a little hard to interpret. I will look for them and see what I can find.

Thanks Regnier (gunrunner)! I appreciate it. I'd been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how I kept making a mistake. Over the past few months, I have been buying several model 60 rifles, with the intent of giving one to each of my grandchildren.

If you happen to come across any definitive production data on my original rifle, I would be most appreciative if you shared it.

Big Shrek,

I have a possible contribution (or correction) to your cross-reference guide listed up above in the first post of this thread. Today I was in a local pawn shop and picked up two more Marlin model 60 clones, but one of them is unlike any other model 60 rifle I've ever seen.

The left of the barrel is marked: "WESTPOINT", then on a line immediately to the right and slightly higher, "COTTER & COMPANY, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA", then beneath this on a second line, "MODEL 50----------CAL.22 LR ONLY". The name "WESTPOINT" is spelled as one word and is in a larger sized font than the two individual lines immediately to it's right.

The serial number on this one is 69190490, so I'm assuming it was made in 1969. It has a walnut finished birch, monte carlo style stock, but without the squirrel, woodchuck, or prairie dog in the pistol grip area.

Hope this helps you with your project!

Utvolsfan77;

Marlin made several different models for Cotter & Company of Chicago, Illinois for a number of years. The gun you mention was the Model 50 for C&C using the Marlin Model 60 as you figured out. These were made between 1968 and 1970 with 2,991 produced. A later Model 60 was made for C&C between 1979 and 1982 as a Model 601 with over 12,000 produced.
I found the production figures I mentioned earlier, but, unfortunately the records only mention numbers of guns produced and in inventory, but no dates of production.

Regnier (gunrunner),

Thanks for the information confirming what I had assumed. I'm learning fast! I now have eight of these little gems. I'm staying busy test firing them, verifying proper functioning, cleaning them thoroughly, and doing some cosmetic touchups in preparation for presenting them to my six grandchildren. There will be some very happy kids a bit later this year! I even came across a Glenfield Model 10 bolt action single shot and a Glenfield Model 25 bolt action with a removable seven round magazine. I picked up the pair for $175 and will be giving them to my daughter and son-in-law to use as "trainers" for the kiddos.

The funny thing about my Model 60 (and clones) collection is that none of them are exactly alike. Sure, they have things in common, but no two are exactly alike. Of the eight rifles, my original Glenfield 60 (purchased in July 1977) is the only one in which the barrel is specifically stamped with .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle, while the other seven indicate Long Rifle only. All eight have 22" barrels. Seven have full length tube magazines holding 18 long rifle rounds while one has about a 19" tube magazine holding only 14 long rifle rounds.

There are four distinctly different front sights used. Three of the newest ones have the "bolt locks halfway open after last round fired" feature and the bolt release lever on the right side just above the trigger guard (similar to the design of many semi-automatic shotguns).

The most interesting difference is three of them have what I thought was the "squirrel" stock. However, upon closer inspection with my glasses on, I discovered I also have three variants there. Only my original Glenfield 60 actually has a squirrel. Of the other two, one has a woodchuck and the other has what I assume is supposed to be a prairie dog. At any rate, when placed side by side, it is readily obvious that three similar but totally different animals are displayed.

Needless to say, I've been having fun and sure am enjoying this ride! :mrgreen:
