1889 Rides Again!

Post by Levi Astorbilt »

Hi All,
In my collection of Marlins, I have 2 1889s. One is a an octagon beauty 95% or better, the other is mostly patina sporting a round barrel and tight and solid. Well, I took the latter out to a local CAS Match. I had reservations at first in regards to abuse. Shot 6 stages, first stage I was slow with the rifle and each stage I pushed it a little harder. Lever latch was a little cumbersome but I adjusted quick. My last two stages I shot it as if it were my 1894 CBC. Had a lot of fun. Really enjoyed the Lyman 1A tang sight on the Old 1889, The 38W funtioned flawlessly. What a fun day! Was a litlle slower than than I usually am for several reasons but still placed very respectably nontheless. NO misses! Shot Clean!
Love my Old Marlins! Wish SASS had not banned my sweet 16 1898 pump!
Cheers!

I had an 1889 in 38W and let it go. About three gun shows back someone had one for sale, it had a cut barrel and had been parkerized, I thought about it for about two minutes and realized I had really enjoyed shooting the one I had before so it followed me home. It may not be collectable in its current condition but sure put a smile on my face, thats what your story did as well. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting find. I was doing my various Marlin searches on Gunbroker and saw this rifle for sale. I had traded it to a fellow SASS member for a fair price as I had 2 1889's in .38-40.
This rifle is now at a Hyatt's Gun Shop in Charlotte NC, if anyone is interested. FUN Shooter!!!
