Marlin 1893

Post by Tcsguns »

I have a mod. 1893, Oct. barrel 38-55 Cal. confirmed by letter from Cody Firearms Museum. However the model number is not on the upper tang, it appears the receiver has been lightly buffed, but not enough to remove the model number, could this rifle have been sent out without the model number, Marlin Safety is on top of the receiver, Marlin factory info and dates are on the barrel and the caliber is on the barrel. Thanks for any help. Tom

Tom;

Some of the earliest Marlin Model 1893's did not have the model marking. Marlin did not have a roll die made up for the model marking, so the early guns were not marked.
If your gun is early enough, the last patent date will be 1889, and not the August 1, 1893 patent date found on most all other Marlin, center-fire lever guns. (those would be the 1893, 1894 and 1895 model guns)
As the first Model 1893's were in .32-40 and .38-55 calibers only, this is a good possibility that your gun is an early gun since it is a .38-55.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Regnier(gunrunner) Thanks for this info, is a lot of help, the letter says the rifle was shipped Sept. 30 1893 so it is early rifle, the serial number is 98xxx. Thanks Tom

I've also owned early 1894 Marlins with no tang rollstamp.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
