Matt;

There really is no decoding to Marlin's serial numbering system. Subtract the first two digits from 100 to determine the year it was manufactured. In this case, 100 - 23 = 77 or 1977.
I hope this helps.

I'm confused could you help clarify please. I have a model 55 Goose Gun and the serial # begins with 03 meaning it was made in 97? According to the info I read they stopped making the 55 Goose Gun back in 88? Any info would be helpfull, thanks.

Toboggan06;

The Model 55 Goose Gun was made up to 1996, then Marlin brought our the Model 55GDL which was like the Goose Gun but with a black synthetic stock. And, it is possible that some of the first long barrel shotguns made in 1997 were regular Goose Guns using some left over parts.
