Anyone ever hear of a Marlin Model 48 shotgun? I found a 49 but no 48.

Bear 45-70;

No, Marlin did not make a Model 48 shotgun. You are correct, there was a Model 49, an exposed hammer, 12 gauge pump action shotgun, and there is a Model 44, a hammerless, 20 gauge pump action shotgun, a Model 50, bolt action 12 gauge shotgun and a Model 60, a single barrel, single shot, 12 gauge shotgun.
What you may be seeing is a Model 43, where the 3 is stamped deeply, making it look like an 8. The Model 43 is a 12 gauge, hammerless pump action shotgun made from 1922 to 1930.
I hope this helps.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
