Sears RANGER 103-14 410 [marlin 90]

Post by madstop »

Recently acquired, very good condition,fun to shoot. I don't think the full chokes are the greatest for skeet. It's # 140 but has an R above the number. That doesn't seem to fit with anything I read. I still assume it's very early. Also,not within what's in Brophy as far as markings. Anyone got any comments? Jay

Jay;

The "Ranger" marked guns were made prior to WW II. Guns made after WW II were marked "J. C. Higgins". The "R" you see is not part of the serial number. The 103.14 is the correct designation for a Model 90 in .410 gauge made for and sold by Sears, Roebuck and Company.
I hope this helps.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thanks for the reply. Do the letters have any meaning? Jay

I have a 12 ga. Ranger 103.1 with the "R" above the serial number. Other Rangers I've seen also have the "R" above the serial number. I have always assumed that the "R" stands for Ranger.

The only Model 90 that has a letter above the serial number is the Skeetking. Offered in 1939 and 1940, Skeetkings have an "S" above the serial number.
