Model 90 problem

Post by Zapata »

I picked up at a pawn shop a 12 ga M 90 some years back, ser #12883, circa 1941 date of mfg, double trigger, 30" bbl. When I took it home and fired it I discovered that when I fired the lower bbl, the gun would start to break open from the recoil. Well, I put it away with thought that when I had time I would look at it and try to find out what was wrong with it. A few months back I revisited the problem, fired it again to make sure that it was not my thumb being in the wrong place, causing the lever to move. The gun does it on its own, when the lower bbl is fired, the lever moves to the right during the recoil stage, causing the latch to disengage. Has anyone else come across this problem before?

If you are still having the problem with your Model 90, you might try posting your question on the Shotgun World web site under Gunsmithing and Restoration (http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewfor ... 0684b2654a.)

Although it is not a 16 ga, there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on the 16ga. Society web site who are very familiar with Marlin Model 90's. (http://www.16ga.com/forum/index.php)

I had the same problem. Apparently it needed a bit more fitting so the barrel release mechanism would more fully engage. I took a small file to the lower edge of the notch on the barrel assembly where the locking bolt engages and cleaned it up a bit at a time until the top lever was sitting absolutely straight when the barrels were closed, something it had not done before. That was the cure.
