Re: ranger 12ga o/u
Tommy80;
The Sears, Roebuck and Company guns marked "Ranger" were made prior to WW II. Guns made after the war were marked J.C. Higgins. So, this would tend to indicate that our Model 90 would have been made sometime between 1937 and 1941.
What is interesting is that your gun, with the 103.5 is a 12 gauge, when Brohpy, in the Marlin book says the 103.5 was used for the .22 caliber rifle over a .410 gauge barrel. The 12 gauge guns were supposed to be marked 103.350 or 103.223.
The serial number prefix "R" does not make sense either as the "R" prefix on other Marlin guns indicated a 1958 manufacturing date.
Not much help here I am sure.......maybe others will weigh in here to clear some things up.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

I have a Ranger 12 ga. Model 103-1 with 30" barrels. It has the first variation forearm iron as illustrated on page 414 of Brophy's book.

Just reread this post. Not sure why I did not answer your question regarding the "R" in the serial number. In case yoyu have not gotten an answer,the R is stamped above the number and it just indicates that the gun is a Ranger. According to Brophy's book, an R in front of the number it would indicate that the gun was made in 1957-58 as Tommy80 stated.
