National Firearms Co. 12 Ga.

Post by Maniac117 »

I may be repeating other posts, but I'm looking for information on this gal. I have yet to give her a once-over, and I don't plan on shooting with it by any means- but my dad has had it for as long as I've been around.
Specs-
Stamped on the left side, middle of the barrel; National Firearms Co. (followed by a star)
Stamped on the left side, by the reciever on the barrel; 12 Ga
Serial # stamped underneath on the reciever, behind the Mag tube

Stock and forearm in great shape, no buttplate though. Action was a little sticky, but some remington oil cleared it up for the moment: I plan on going through her with the Otis cleaning kit.

Barrel is 25-25.5" with a Poly adjustable choke; still adjusts with no problem, clicks between each setting with a light but firm twist.

I'm looking for any information on her, worth and thoughts, advice and questions.

Maniac117;

Looking at the photos, this shotgun has the later style takedown system and hang fire safety release down by the trigger guard (early Model 24's had the first style hang fire safety release up near the hammer). These were used on the Model 24 Marlin shotgun which was listed in the catalogs from 1908 to 1915. With the pistol grip stock and takedown action and newer safety release, it would appear to be a later and updated version of the Model 24.
Be advised that Marlin has issued a Service Bulletin advising owners of these old pump action shotgun NOT to fire them. Everything must be in complete working order in order for them to be safe to shoot. There is a website you can go to and complete the safety checks necessary to see if your gun would be safe to shoot, using light loads only.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Regnier,

I'll find the site and run it through the checks, but believe me when I say I will not try firing it myself- My dad had it sitting around, and just because I happen to be the gun lover in my family, I'm nominated.

So this is a later version, Is the choke factory, or a aftermarket feature? Also, is this better as a wall hanger, or is there a small demand or market looking to buy these? I like the solid feel of the wood furnishing on this shotgun, but I have no place to keep it to tell the truth. What do you suggest?

Also, thanks for replying to my post!

Maniac117;

The poly choke is not original or a factory option. It was added at a later date.
Personally, since this is more or less a family piece, I would keep it as a keepsake in some manner. Even if it means it has to go to a cousin, uncle, etc. I believe a family piece should be just that, a family piece.
There was a good market for these until the Cowboy shooter associations banned them from use in competition shooting. The associations said they just were not safe enough to be shooting them around other people. There are a few out there now starting to collect the Marlin shotguns as the price is not all that high right now. Marlin made over 150,000 of them from 1898 to 1916, so there are lots of them to choose from.
I hope this helps.

Regnier,

It did help, I appreciate the information and the advice. I'll clean it up a bit, find a butt plate, and store her. Maybe remove a piece of the action and put it up for show.. No sale for this one, it will remain in the family.

Thanks again Gunrunner! It means alot.
