The "S" indicates a later, improved version of the Model 19. There were serveral different versions (no prefix, D, S, G and N). The "S" version tend to be guns with an "A" serial number prefix, indicating it was assembled from parts on hand by the Marlin-Rockwell Corporation during WW I. Improvements include the improved takedown or safety release mechanism or other internal changes.
