Marlin 1898 chamber size
What is the chamber size of a Marlin 1898? Being an older shotgun, does it have a 2 1/2" chamber? Does this mean modern 2 3/4" shells should not be fired in it? Someone told me low brass shells should be safe because they have lower pressure than high brass shells. Is this true?

The chamber will handle the 2 3/4 inch shell. Marlin listed them with either the 2 5/8 or 2 3/4 inch shell in the catalogs.
Just use any low pressure shells. Just be sure all safety devices on your Model 1898 are in working order before firing. The action must be fully locked up and the secondary safety sear set off to fire.

You said the action must be fully locked. When I pull the slide back, then push it forward, the hammer stays back (cocked), and the slide cannot be pulled back. Does that mean it is locked? Also, how can I tell if the shells are low pressure. It doesn't say on the box.
