Marlin 12ga Hammer Shotgun Mod 49

Post by johnwy »

Hello,

Trying to rejuvenate my father’s old shotgun. The magazine tube was torn at muzzle end at the notch that goes around the mounting lug on the barrel when the tube is rotated to remove the barrel and mag tube assembly. I purchased a used part online, but it is slightly different than the one on my dad’s shotgun.

All dimensions are exact, but the damaged tube has a lug brazed onto it near the center of the tube. A groove in the wooden forend rides on the lug, and the lug acts as a slide stop as the slide will strike the lug when moving the forend towards the muzzle. The lug rides in the groove in wooden slide, and appears to also act as a slide-stop as it will strike the metal slide rod when reaching the limit of intended travel.

I’m guessing that someone may have installed the lug on the slide tube possibly as a “repair”, as I do not see any other slide-stop mechanism (don’t have the slide-stop part I see in schematics online). I think this may be what damaged the tube in the first place because using a lug mounted on the tube as a slide-stop has the effect of jamming the slide tube against the small pin holding it in place near the muzzle end. Doesn’t seem like that would have been the way this would have been engineered, but I’m no gun-smith!!

When I installed the replacement tube without the lug, everything functions fine, but the slide moves too far forward and the slide-rod disconnects from the receiver when moving the slide towards the muzzle to lock the breech bolt.

QUESTION: Do all shotguns in this family share the same magazine tube and slide-stop mechanism, or are there alternative designs? Do I likely just need to purchase and install a “slide-stop” to solve this problem? All other components of the shotgun look solid and serviceable.

Thanks,

John

John;

From your description of having to "twist" the end of the magazine tube, it sounds like you have a first variation of the Marlin shotgun takedown system. When the Model 49 was produced, it was pretty much made up of left over parts and there are a couple of variations of the Model 49 using these left over parts.
It really sounds like the slide stop is missing. If there is a notch in both the action slide arm, and the side of the barrel, just in front of the locking ring, then you do have the first variation of the takedown system, and the slide stop is what keeps the action arm from pulling out of the front of the receiver when you move the action arm forward. When the gun is in use, the slide stop lays in the notch in the side of the barrel and will keep the action arm connected to the breech bolt. When you take the action down, you have to line up the notch in the action arm, and then move the slide stop over into the action arm notch and pull the action arm forward to disconnect the action arm from the breech bolt.
There was a slide stop on eBay for quite a while, but I checked and cannot find it now. You might keep an eye on eBay to see if it gets relisted later. They do show up there from time to time.
Good luck......

Thanks for the info - much appreciated. I know that Numrich Gun Parts stocks a slide stop for the Model 49, so I’ll inspect the barrel for the necessary notch and potentially order a slide-stop. Will post what I find.

Thanks again,

@gunrunner, there is no notch in my barrel at the locking ring. Appears there is no location to connect the slide stop. I've looked on-line at other barrels and have seen the notch you reference, but my barrel is solid all the way around near the locking ring.

I've added some links to photos below that hopefully will help in any diagnosis.

Any guidance you may have at this point is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Johnwy;

Dropbox says the photos do not exist, so I am unable to see them. Maybe you can email them to me. Click on the contact icon and then the email icon to contact me directly.

John;

A photo of the front of the receiver would be helpful. That is where the slide stop enters the receiver, preventing the pump action arm from pulling out of the breech bolt when the slide stop is in place, laying in the notch in the side of the barrel.
Your barrel was replaced at some point in time, and with one that is from a later gun that used the 2nd style takedown system.
Since this is the case, you should get the slide stop, then file a notch in the barrel to receive the stop, and also file a notch in the pump action arm so that you can take the gun down later.
What someone did was to solder that lug on the side of the barrel, and the groove inside the forearm slides on that to work the action, but without the slide stop, the action will disconnect when the action arm is pulled to far forward.
Let me know when you post the photo of the front of the receiver and I can help get you with the information you need to make this work.

Slide Stop - https://www.dropbox.com/s/yx1xltulw8szk ... .jpeg?dl=0

I did purchase a Slide-Stop from Numrich Gun Parts Corp (https://www.gunpartscorp.com/)

Can not thank you enough for the assistance!!

John;

Everything looks correct. The notch in the barrel should be just in front of the barrel locking ring. The slide stop should fit snugly in the notch with some friction to get it out of the notch. The notch in the action arm will be a little forward of the slide stop position. The instructions for takedown say that the action arm had to be moved slightly rearward to line the action arm notch with the slide stop and then the slide stop "tipped" over into the action arm notch, and then the action arm moved forward to disconnect the action arm from the breech bolt and pulled clear of the receiver.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.....

Quick thank you for the advice. I used a Dremel with a grinding wheel to notch the barrel with a shape that matched the slide lock. As instructed, I also put the small notch in the slide rod as well. Works like a charm!

Thanks again,

John
