Blynn;

With an "A" prefix serial number, this should not be a Model 1898. What patent dates are listed on the barrel? Is it a straight grip gun or a pistol grip gun? Is it a solid frame receiver or a takedown receiver? Where is the "Hang Fire Safety" release located? (down by the trigger guard, or is it a small button on the upper right side of the receiver near the hammer?) What letter (F, M, or C) is next to the barrel serial number?
The "A" serial number indicates this shotgun was made in about 1916. At this time, Marlin Arms or Marlin-Rockwell was using many parts on hand to assemble sporting arms.
Looking forward to your reply.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Blynn;

The "C" letter next to the barrel serial number indicates that the barrel has a Cylinder bore or no choke. This is correct for a Riot Gun. The last patent date of November of 1904 indicates that this barrel was made for a Model 19.
Check the upper tang of the receiver, behind the hammer for a model marking. I would bet that it is marked Model 19. Even though the Model 19 was cataloged for only 2 years, (1906 & 1907) it appears that it was in production much longer as the observed serial numbers are much higher than any gun made in 1907 should have. Some even have serial numbers that should have been made as late as 1915.
If this is a Model 19, and a proper Riot Gun, the $160.00 asking price is very fair.
These early Marlin shotguns have a reputation of not being safe to shoot. Before firing this shotgun (with low pressure rounds) run the gun through the safety checks to insure it locks up properly. If it does not lock up properly, there are have been instances where the breech bolt releases from the receiver, going straight back, right towards the shooters eye. So, be aware.............
