Great Grand Fathers shotgun

Post by True Grit »

In my lap as I type I have a Marlin FIRE-ARMS Co shotgun, PAT'D 1894, May 12, 1896 , June 2 1896 I assume a 12 gu. but I can not find that anywhere on this shotgun, Original condition never been refinished bluing gone and nicks in metal and stock are minor.Reciever of this pump, hammer shotgun shows 4914 and the right lower side of barrel in front of reciever shows 4783. No othr prominate markings can I find.

Anyone got an idea of what this is, and what the old Marlins are worth?

From the patent dates, sounds like a Model 1898. You didn't mention if it has an exposed hammer or not, but the patents match for an 1898. This should be 12ga. There's two variations, the early one doesn't have the bolt release button on the side of the receiver back by the hammer, which the second does. They were made in several grades with the A's being the plain field grade guns. The serial for the gun in the one on the receiver, barrels were numbered separately..........Buck 8)
If Marlin made SA revolvers, I'd be shooting those, too!!!
