I just recieved a shot gun from my grandfatherand dont know what model it is. I was wondering if any one could tell from the serial number
61420 it says 16 guage and special smokless steel on the barrel can some one maybe help me identifiy this gun

You should have a Marlin Model 16. The Model 16 was made from 1903 to 1910. It was Marlin's first 16 gauge shotgun, and generally not marked with a model number like most of the later shotguns. The Model 16 used a smaller receiver than the previous Model 1898, made especially for the 16 gauge cartridge. The Model 16 is a takedown action and in your case, you have a "B" grade gun with a 28 inch barrel, factory checking on the stocks and was shipped in mid-1904. It originally sold for $32.75 in 1904.
