Which big bore for elk?

Post by nimrod »

Need information on the .450, .444, and the 45/70. Looking for an elk gun for close range but want to buy the gun with the longest trajectory. What issues are there in hand loading and bullet price. Also, can anyone talk me into sticking with my 30-30?

All will kill Mr. Elk graveyard dead in short order, so the next step is to determine which you will be able to shoot best. Are you recoil sensitive? Do you reload? Are you an experienced elk hunter able to put the sneak on elk for the close shot you mention? If you are under 100 yards from the elk when you press the trigger, you won't notice that much difference between the three.

I am partial to the 444, but there are others who can make an atriculate case for the other cartridges. So see also: http://www.marlinowners.com and read back posts on the big bore forum. There's quite a bit to be learned there from folks who shoot all 3 calibers regularly. SW.
I am really not an expert - distinguished or otherwise!!
