Building a Marlin 1895 Cowboy into a 40-60 Marlin.

Post by Jim Susemihl »

I am thinking about building a 40-60 Marlin out of an 1895 Cowboy. I have bought a box of ammo (40-65 Winchester) and tried it for feeding problems. It will feed through the action fine. The next step it to find a gunsmith that will reline the 45-70 barrel to 40-60. I am not sure if the liners are thin enough that it would be a problem going down this far in caliber or not. Any ideas? I already have three 45-70s and like the old cartridges real well and would like to try a 40-60. I think it would be real fun at the cowboy long range shoots.

You mentioned you have a re-barreled Marlin and the cost was not bad. Can you recomend the person that did the work. I'm very interested is having one built. Also would like to get a 336 built in a 336A style in 38-55 with a half octogon half round 24" bbl. and pistol grip. I'm new to this site, but really glad I found it., Thanks.

Martin Potts,
I think Jim was referring to the .40-60 Marlin cartridge, or the .40-65 Win. cartridge. The two are almost identical, and actually either will interchange in guns chambered for these calibers.
As you noted the .40-60 W and .40-65 W don't interchange.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
