Looking for info Ballard #9 with G.H.Tryon stamped on stock

Post by DhowdyHowitzer »

I'm looking for any information regarding markings found on my Marlin (Ballard #9). On the buttstock, under the cheekpiece it has the name G H Tryon stamped. Anyone know anything about this particular marking?

Dhowdyhowitzer;

I found a G. H. Tryon in Frank Seller's book, American Gunsmiths but no E. H. Tryon. G. H. Tryon was in Perry, Iowa, but that is all that is listed.
With just initials, it is hard to trace names, unless you have some background as to where the gun came from to begin with. Then, you might be able to go to the National Archives and look at the census records for more information. It may be a long shot, but I have had some luck searching that way.
You might try to GOOGLE the Tryon name to see if there is any family trees online to look at too.
Good luck.........
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!
