There are virtually no serial number records for the Ballard rifles. About the only way to determine date of manufacture is by estimating the serial number against the markings on the side of the receiver.
Early Ballards (starting in 1875) are marked J. M. Marlin whereas guns made after 1881 were marked Marlin Fire-Arms Company. From there, the serial number can fall into a range of numbers that might help narrow down when it may have been made.
