Replacing front sight, right way to do it?

Post by patbig »

I am going to replace the front sight on my n2, a previous owner had filed it to near nothing and I can hardly see it. It's a .375 dovetail and I wonder if there 's right and wrong way to remove it. I think of using a piece of wood and hammering it out nice and easy, but does it matter which way, left to right, or right to left? I just got 150 .32 Long Colt cases that a buddy of mine resized from 32 S&W Long, apparently he swaged the heads since the primer pocket has become way too small. He must have some massive press. Small issue anyway, now I am awash in brass and I just got the NEI 32 Long Colt mould, so the old rifle's gonna be alive again. I am getting 1 kg of n1 Swiss black powder this week end at a gun show, that's what I'll be using.
Thanks for you advice,
Pat

Always push the sights out left to right Pat! Might not work with a piece of wood, unless it's very hard wood. A piece of solid brass or a brass punch would work best.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
