Year of manufacture by serial number?

Post by Terry B » Mon Feb 25, 2013 12:28 pm

Does anyone have a book that can tell the year my #2 sporting rifle was made? I guess they started in 1876-1889 but I would like to narrow it down. Serial on my rifle #22XXX. Thanks for any info!

There are no records for Ballard rifles, except for about a dozen that somehow got recorded with other Marlin records. If you can tell me the rollstamp info on the left side of the frame, plus what type lever it has (S or ring type) and if it has a horn inlay in the forearm, then might determine if it's early or later.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
