Hi , New to the Forum... I was wanting to find out if an 1893 30-30 octagon barrel 20 inch (20 3/16 from the crown to the bolt face ) , is Factory or cut. No sign of non factory seen. Front sight dovetail is 15/16 crown to center of dove. Special smokeless Steel marked. Marlin Address Roll Stamp begins 1 1/2 inches ahead of handguard steel endcap. Rifle crescent butt plate. Serial #277630. Not much case color left on the receiver. Bore seems good 7.
Any info. appreciated. Malcolm.

Malcolm;
Unfortunatley Malcolm, the old factory records show that serial number left the factory in New Haven, Ct. in mid-1903 with a 26 inch octagon barrel in the .30-30 caliber.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thank you Regnier ,for the reply. I recon if it had been sent back to shorten the barrel there would be a work order for it at Marlin. Can you or any of the others say what the difference is between an 1893 and an 1895?

Malcolm;
The Model 1893 would be considered a medium frame rifle whereas the Model 1895 is considered the large frame rifle. The Model 1893 was made in .32-40, .38-55, .30-30, .25-36 Marlin and .32 H.P.S. calibers and the Model 1895 were the "big bore" calibers. Those would include the .38-56, .40-65, .40-70, .40-82, .45-70, .45-85, .45-90 and .33 Winchester. Some of the calibers of the Model 1895 are the same cartridge, just a lighter bullet with more powder charge.
The design of the receiver is the same, just on a different size and scale. Both were made in either a solid frame or takedown actions. Any option available, such as engraving, plating, pistol grip stock, etc. that could be ordered from Marlin was offered to all Marlin lever action rifles.
The Model 1894 was the smaller frame rifle available in pistol size cartridges. The Model 1894 was made in .25-20, .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40 calibers.

Thank You for the information .Marlin seems to have been concerned with simplicity in design. When the cartridge becomes large make the frame a bit bigger the barrel a little heavier.
