How Do I Identify the Type of 336 I Have?

Post by csraetcm »

This is a 30-30 I'm trying to get more information on. The barrel is stamped as follows:

THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.
EST. 1870-MICRO-GROOVE BARREL-MOD.336 CAL. 30-30 WIN

This is a straight grip and based on serial number, 2009XXXX, manufactured in 1980. Hooded front site. It does not have anything after 336 on the barrel. I've seen various versions of 336 in trying to research this rifle and just want to confirm that it is simply a straight grip 336 micro-groove 30-30. Is there any other means to get more info about this rifle? Thanks!

A straight grip Marlin Model 336 is most likely a version called a "Texan" Carbine. Unless, your gun has a 16 1/2 inch long barrel, then it would be a Model 336 Marauder Carbine, which are rare, but were made only one year, 1963 to 1964. Since your gun was made in 1980, it will be a Model 336 Texan Carbine with a 20 inch barrel and magazine.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thank you for the info. 20 inch barrel with hooded front sight. No saddle ring though. Does not the Texas Carbine have the brass saddle ring on left side of the receiver? This one does not. Thanks again!

The brass saddle ring was added to the Texan in 1965, but eliminated in 1971. So, your 1980 gun was too late to have the brass saddle ring.
