Production numbers, Ballard rifled 35 Rem 336 Texans?

Post by Sarge »

First, hello from MO and thanks for hosting this forum.

I have an old Marlin Model 336 Texan with Ballard rifling. It has the 1955 M prefix and does not have any part of the serial number etched on the underside of the bolt, which I understand indicates it was produced prior to April 14th of that year. It’s a great old rifle and is the slickest operating and most accurate Marlin I’ve ever owned. I’ll include a pic of it doing what it does best.

Reading up on these old guns leads me to believe they’re fairly scarce. Does anyone here have an idea of how many Ballard rifled Texans were produced in the years Marlin made them, either by year or in total?

It's been a month folks. The newsletters of this Association have been cited in various published works on Marlin lever actions; yet no one here knows--or cares to answer--regarding even ballpark figures on the numbers of Ballard Texans produced, or even Ballard rifled 336s?

Sarge;

No one can answer that question as the Marlin Company never released those numbers. Now if you had asked about the Model 39-A and 39-M, we could tell you that as we do have those numbers. Even the Brophy book that has lots of production numbers on various models and variations, the information you seek is not there. Simply put, no one really knows the answer(s).

Thank you Regnier and I especially appreciate you letting me know that information isn't in the Brophy book either. I do have Murray's reference on the 336 and have enjoyed reading it.

Has the Association considered establishing an Internet database of known, existing early 336 Marlins?

Or, more specifically, an Internet serial number* database of known, existing early 336 Marlins? Contributors could X the last two digits of their serial number(s) which would place a particular gun within 99 others in production.

* Haven't figured out how to edit a post yet.

Sarge;

If anyone wants to establish such a database, they are free to do so. There are others that have done just that for other models and variations. They can put a post here under the "Wanted" section for information on anything they want to research.
