Need Information on my Marlin Lever Action

Post by jim1117 »

Hello.
I got this in a trade a couple of years ago. Would really like some info on it.
Patent dates are: Nov 19 1878 Apr 2 1889 Aug 12 1890 Mar 1 1892
Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, CT U.S.A.
Serial #: 435XXX is on the receiver bottom and the 4 is a little distorted.
The is a hexagon barrel 23 1/2" long.
It is marked: 22 S L & LR
This is in almost like new condition so it might have been refinished. If so, they did a good job.
No model number anywhere I can see.
I have been unable to find anything on it yet.
Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Jim;

You have either a Marlin Model '92 or Model '97, and with a serial number in the 435,000 range would have been made around 1913. Those patent dates were used on both models.
There should be a model marking on the upper tang, behind the hammer.
A Model '92 will have a removable side plate only, whereas a Model '97 is a full takedown action where you unscrew the thumbscrew on the side of the receiver, cock the hammer and the gun will "break" apart into 2 pieces at the receiver.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.

If the world was perfect.......it wouldn't be.

Hello Gunrunner and thanks for the very quick, and correct, response!
I have not the best eyesight in the world but was just cleaning the bore again and the light just hit the Model information just right...and there it was: MARLIN MODEL '92
Not sure why I did not see it sooner!
Now to read up on it and see what I have!
Thanks again!

Better if you repost this in your own thread. It will get lost tagging on another's thread.
