I have aquired this old rifle that has a serial number 96116 which i thought was an 1894 but there is no MARLIN 1894 on top tang. Any ideas? Thx

Re: MARLIN SAFETY .32WIN
It should indeed be a Model 1894. But a first year 1894, and very early production. But being a first year gun, most do not have the rollstamp on the top tang then. That didn't start until 1895. Since the guns hit the market in mid summer, there's about 6 months of manufacture before the rollstamp started.
Being such an early gun I'm surprised it's a .32 W. caliber? Most of the earliest guns were in .44-40 and .38-40 calibers.
