1895 38-56 loads with smokeless

Post by loggerhead »

new to me a very early 1895 in 38-56 that of course I'd like to fire. got 0.381" BTs, necked down starline 40-65s. and AA5744. Serial 1384xx. NO marking of special smokeless steel on barrel. guessing 'bout 20 to 22 gr. should duplicate original bp load velocity. in the view of the knowledgeable folks here, how safe is this level of loading with 5744? rifleing diminished for about 6-8" in front of chamber but still exists there. pristine from there to muzzle. slugged 0.381 with reduced effort for those mentioned 6-8". Venturino suggests this level in Win 86's as does Barsness in vintage 38-55's. :?: :?:
