Marlin Model 92 questions

Post by Ron83714 »

I am seeking information on a Marlin Model 92 I inherited from my Uncle. He acquired it from a friend in the 1950s.
Description:
24 inch Octagon barrel
Tube magazine
Patent dates January 18, 1887, April 2, 1889, August 12, 1890; March 1, 1892
Serial number 2986xx

I am interested in converting it to .32 centerfire and have been told the firing pins were made in such a way it could be flipped 180 degrees converting it to centerfire. Is this accurate?
Where can I find instructions on disassembly and cleaning?

Thanks.

Ron83714;

Your Marlin Model '92 with the serial number in the 298,000 range should have shipped from the factory in New Haven, Ct. in 1904.
The Model 1892/'92 was originally sold with 2 firing pins. One for center-fire cartridges and one for rim-fire cartridges. One needed only to unscrew the side plate and remove the breech bolt and switch the firing pins to change ammunition types. The .32 Colt cartridge came in short, long and long rifle sizes in both the rim and center-fire cartridges.
You can get new firing pins from Wisner's ( www.wisnersinc.com )
There really is not much to cleaning the Model 1892/'92 action. Simply remove the side plate, lift out the cartridge lifter, remove the breech bolt and ejector and the bore can be cleaned from the breech end as it should be.
Good luck.......
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

One of your biggest issues once converted to centerfire will be finding ammo for it! You can't use the easy to find .32 S&W Long, or Short. It needs to be .32 Long, or .32 Short, or the .32 Colt Long, or Short. The S&W cartridge is too large a diameter to chamber in your gun.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
