Marlin 1881 questions

Post by Eighteenninetytwo »

First time posting here.
I found an 1881 in 45-70 at my local gun store. Serial is 12045 which dates it (according to the interweb) at 1886
I can only find one serial number on it - should more than one be visible? I read that they are on the buttplate, so does that mean that the buttplate and / or buttstock could be a replacement?

I really like it - always had a thing for lever guns as I watched a lot of westerns when I was a kid (and a Gatling gun is out of the question),
I just want to check how these do with modern 45-70 ammo - I ASSUME there are lower power rounds available or is this a 'reload or don't shoot it' situation.
