was wondering what the S means

The "S" stands for safety. In 1984, Marlin introduced the cross bolt safety, and after that, for a while, all models produced had the "S" added to the model designation. I.E. the Model 39-A became the Model 39-AS.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

The growing federal deficit = generational slavery to the national debt.
