marlin model 97

Post by genestarr »

I have a Marlin model '97. The tang is marked model 97. It is a delux model as per the checkering and pistol grip. There are no other marks on this rifle concerning caliber It is a .22? I have a letter from the Cody museum confirming all this but am wondering why there are no other marks on rifle concerning caliber etc. It was shipped in 1905.

Genestarr;

All Marlin Model 1897/'97's were made in .22 caliber only, so at the time, there was no need to mark a caliber on the barrel. Later Model '97's were marked with .22S, L, LR on the side of the barrel. Roll dies were expensive to make, so anything that could be done to save money was the trend.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thank you very much. I have been wanting to ask that question for years. Glad I finally did ask.
